Lay Sign Monument On Ground On Packing Foam From Crate

How To Install A Sign Monument – DIY

Posted on June 20, 2026June 20, 2026 by BSM Staff

The Complete Guide to Monument Sign Installation: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Sign Monuments are free-standing, ground-level structures that offer high visibility and a permanent look for businesses, schools, and subdivisions. While traditional masonry structures require intensive labor and costs, modern lightweight alternatives, such as the Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam-core monuments made by BestSignMonuments.com, allow property owners and contractors to complete professional installations in just a couple hours.

This guide details the essential phases for a successful ground-mount installation.

The order process from design to fabrication is complete. You will receive photography of your made-to-order sign monument for approval before it is crated and shipped to your job site. Here is an example of a business park sign monument with changeable tenant panels on our production floor:

Step One: Position The Monument On The Property

Take time to drive by from both directions and make sure the angle is best. Position the monument such that utility poles and trees do not block the sign, and that all wording is legible. Once the perfect location is selected, position foam blocks from the shipping crate (or a blanket) to lay the sign monument flat. This will protect the sign from getting dirty, and allow access to the pipe receiving holes in the bottom of the unit.

Step Two: Dig Holes

Measure the distance apart between the receiving holes in the base of the monument. Reference the footer diagram included in the crate to dig holes the width and depth as illustrated.

Step Three: Insert Pipes With Expanding Foam

Spray some foam into the receiving hole first. Slide the pipe in slowly as you continue to spray in expanding foam. Twist the pipe while inserting to ensure foam adheres to the pipe all the way around. Don’t get the expanding foam on your hand – it will take a couple weeks to wear off you skin!

Step Four: Lift And Insert Sign Monument Into Holes

It’s okay of the pipes slide down into the holes. You have plenty of time before the expanding foam completes it increase in size and becomes hard.

Step Five: Mix Concrete And Fill Holes

Use sack concrete from your local hardware store. Typically, three 60 pound bags of QuikRete will be enough per hole.

Step Six: Remove Support Block And Drop Sign Down

Lift the edge of the monument just enough so you can kick the foam block out from underneath the monument. These were put in place so that concrete would not spill on to the sign. If any concrete does get on the sign, use water to simply wash it off before it sets.

Using a level, make sure the sign is level on the top and up on of the sides (not leaning forward). Use a gardening rake to spread out any dirt from the holes.

Step Seven: Landscape Bed

We recommend using the dirt from the holes under the sign to make it slightly above grade. Like a baseball pitcher on a pitcher’s mount. Use large rocks or some form of border around the entire unit so landscapers can’t hit it in the future. Fill the border bed with mulch, river rock – whatever complements your landscaping. This will pull the whole project together and provide you with decades of use.

Here is an example of a proper landscape bed. These metal borders are available at any local hardware store, and are easy to install.

This entire process should not take more than 2 hours for a 5′ tall x 10′ wide monument. If you can install a mailbox on a post at the end of your driveway, you can install our product. DIY does NOT affect the product warranty. There is nothing you can do to damage our product without trying really, really hard (using a chainsaw, or shotgun maybe?).
