Faux masonry, faux stone, and faux brick. Sometimes the word faux (pronounced fō) suggests “fake,” which suggests cheap in quality. We would like to clear up this misunderstanding on sign monument projects.
There are companies that sell faux masonry in digital reproduction. They basically scan a picture of brick or rock, then print it digitally on an adhesive backed vinyl, and apply it to a smooth, flat surface. This product is basically a sticker.
Our faux masonry products are actually hand-carved, three dimensional reliefs that we apply to our stucco monument signs. The masonry patterns are fabricated before the hard-coating process, so the pattern becomes an integrated part of the sign.
Most commercial stone applications are actually a synthetic concrete veneer, where each stone (or brick) is made in a mold of various sizes and shapes, then applied to a concrete wall at the job site. There is an issue with this down the road. The individual pieces may fall off in time. Here is an example of today’s commercial-grade stone solution:
